Noble Lies
"He who overcomes shall inherit all things, and I will be his God and he shall be My son But the cowardly, unbelieving, abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.”
Revelation 21:7-8, NKJV
There is a popular excuse among many of our authorities who have been caught red-handed in failing to handle to speak the truth accurately: "These were just noble lies" told to protect a people who would not be able to understand the truth. In other words, we cannot handle the truth!
And what is a noble lie? Here are some examples from our own recent history: "Masks don't work", which was changed a few months later to mask mandates. "We are going to shut everything down for 15 days to get control of the disease, but after that everything will go back to normal" changed to a forced shut down of multiple months which resulted in lost jobs, product shortages, and suicides. Or how about this: "science shows that natural immunity is ineffective" changed from over a hundred years of scientific evidence to the contrary.
Now you can probably think of ten more "noble lies" for every one of these public utterances listed here, but I'm sure you get the point. Any time a person is tempted to lie and then consider it a virtue has something fundamentally flawed in their thinking. And these fundamental flaws always come back to harm either the liar or the one lied to, and often to both.
So what is the solution? The most obvious is to stop telling lies if you have been in the habit of doing so, no matter how justified you have felt you were in telling the lie. The second is to stop supporting anyone who has convinced themselves that something can be noble that God has judged as worthy of Hell. It seems to be a simple solution to a complex problem, but when you think about it, maybe we have become a bit too clever for our own good lately and need to return to the simple truth.
"and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
John 8:32, ESV
