What Can We Do?
Our help is in the name of the LORD, who made heaven and earth.
Palm 124:8, KJV
There is a lot going on in this world today. We have no sooner caught our breath from a bug of questionable origin and the ensuing financial consequences with rising prices and supply shortages, only to now be experiencing war and rumors of war. If a person didn't know better they might think that someone is trying to distract them from something...
While conspiracy theories abound during such times, I don't want you to think that this is the direction I am going with this article today. For though it is true that there have always been evil people plotting some sort of mischief that they are certain will allow them to gain more power and wealth, in the end it is nothing more and nothing less than that age old battle between good and evil. We still live in a world in which Satan is allowed to distract us from the truly important and it would be good for us to not lose sight of the fact that we are still servants of God. When the apostle Paul was writing to the church at Corinth, he reminded them of this very thing
Another reason I wrote you was to see if you would stand the test and be obedient in everything. in order that Satan might not outwit us. For we are not unaware of his schemes.
II Corinthians 2:10-12, NIV
This life is still a test. God does not want the evil to occur that does, (this is why sin is sin), but He does allow us to go through difficulties. Evil men, whether they realize it or not, are still under the influence of Satan because they have given themselves over to him. Since this is true, there will always be turmoil in this world and the innocent will always suffer because of it. So, again, what are we to do?
Perhaps the actions of a certain king of Judah will help. In his time wicked forces aligned themselves against his people, and these forces were way too much for him to handle by human means alone. So, it is instructive to note what he did when the nation he ruled was on the brink of being overwhelmed - he humbly turned to God in prayer! In fact, the entire nation, with their children beside them, turned out for that prayer. Here is a part of that prayer"
O our God, will you not execute judgment on them? For we are powerless against this great horde that is coming against us. We do not know what to do, but our eyes are on you.”
II Chronicles 20:12, ESV
We do not know what to do, but our eyes are on you! That's the solution to our question, isn't it? To acknowledge that we are powerless to stop evil by our own power, and then to turn to the one Power who can. So what happened as a result of this wise king's prayer? I'm glad you asked:
All the men of Judah, with their wives and children and little ones, stood there before the LORD. Then the Spirit of the LORD came on Jahaziel son of Zechariah, the son of Benaiah, the son of Jeiel, the son of Mattaniah, a Levite and descendant of Asaph, as he stood in the assembly He said: “Listen, King Jehoshaphat and all who live in Judah and Jerusalem! This is what the LORD says to you: ‘Do not be afraid or discouraged because of this vast army. For the battle is not yours, but God’s.
II Chronicles 20:13-15, NIV
I think that this would help with the problems of the world we live in right now... do you?
