The Bible on Homosexuality
As hard as it is to believe, one of the most discussed topics in America now is homosexuality. Our supreme court is talking about it, churches are accepting it and, if you get your information from the pop-culture, you would think that acknowledging that such conduct is sin is something akin to racism.
It is interesting to note, though, what the Bible has to say on this subject. Did you know that homosexuality is one of the few things that is called sin in all three dispensations of the Bible? From Sodom (from which we get the word for sodomy) to the Law of Moses, to the specific teachings of Christianity, the sin of homosexuality is not only condemned, but also came with very specific penalties.
For example, Sodom and Gomorrah were destroyed by fire during the time of the Patriarchs. The Law of Moses called for capital punishment for homosexual offenders, and the New Testament teaches that such conduct will exclude people from the kingdom of God. You don't have to believe in the Bible, if you prefer not to, but you cannot deny it's teachings. Consider the following:
Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites, nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God. I Corinthians 6:9-10, NKJV
For this reason God gave them up to vile passions. For even their women exchanged the natural use for what is against nature. Likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust for one another, men with men committing what is shameful, and receiving in themselves the penalty of their error which was due. Romans 1:26-27, NKJV
Some will read these verses (penned through inspiration by the Apostle Paul) and say that they don't count because these words were not uttered by Jesus, but by Paul. The only problem with this line of thinking is that Jesus never was quoted as speaking on many subjects including homosexuality, true, but also grace. Do you know of anyone who wants to discount the Bible's teaching on grace because it is never mentioned by Jesus?
The fact is, like it or not, that all of the New Testament teachings are authorized by Jesus. Consider His words to the apostles:
"Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, [even] to the end of the age." Amen. Matthew 28:19-20, NIV
The point of all this is that the Bible is crystal clear when it comes to the fact that God identifies homosexuality as sin. Having said that, please do not miss this point: The Bible is also clear on the fact that this sin can be forgiven, and that we need to love all people even if they stumble. So, for those who practice homosexuality, the requirement is clear: Don't try to normalize something that God calls sin, instead, repent! And, for those who might be tempted to not forgive those who have repented of this sin, the requirement is also clear:
Forgive them.
