"Do you believe something about God? Put your finger on it in the Bible! If you cannot put your finger on it in the Bible, it isn't worth believing."
Gordon Naylor
"He who has ears, let him hear."
Matthew 13:9, RSV
It's probably been 30 years since I heard a preacher by the name of Gordon Naylor issue the statement you see above. It's intelligence and simplicity can be readily appreciated. If you believe something about God, stick your finger on it in the Bible! If it's not there, it is simply not worth believing.
Jesus said essentially the same thing on a number of different occasions: "He who has ears, let him hear." The idea is that we have a fine minds given to us by God. God does not make inferior merchandise so we can assume that our fine minds are in proper working order. That means that we can understand what He has to say! That means that we don't have to treat faith like we do superstition and just accept anything that anyone says about God. We don't have to take that chance because we have the ultimate reference guide with which to compare our beliefs!
My Aunt was a fine woman, but she firmly believed that you should never walk under a ladder or go along a street where a black cat had just crossed. I remember her chastising me very severely when I was a young boy for walking under a ladder - what was I thinking? We smile at the silly superstitions of an era gone by, but how many people do essentially the same thing by accepting all sorts of things about God as "fact" that have absolutely nothing at all to do with the Bible? Even more pertinent, how many of us don't believe things about God and His commands, even though they are clearly stated within the Scripture?
That's the reason for this study! You have an opportunity in just 90 short days to study through the New Testament and find out what God has to say about everything from salvation to His love and tender mercies. And once you have accomplished this feat, you will not have to wonder whether your beliefs are correct or not, for...
you will have put your finger on it in the Bible! You will have used your ears and actually heard what God has to say.
I know that 90 days is a long time for some - and this a a great commitment to be sure. At the end of this study, you will be 90 days older - and 90 days wiser! On the other hand, if you don't do this study, you will still be 90 days older... but you won't be one day wiser!
I pray that you will take up this challenge and take the next 90 days to really and truly find out everything that God wants you to know!
"The Son of man will send His angels, and they will gather out of His kingdom all causes of sin and all evildoers, and throw them into the furnace of fire; there men will weep and gnash their teeth. Then the righteous will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father.
He who has ears, let him hear."
Matthew 13:41-43, RSV
Today is day 5 of the 90 day commitment to study through the New Testament. The study for today is 13th through the 15th chapters of Matthew. May God bless you richly as you seek His will!
