Paying the Price
All wish to be learned, but no one is willing to pay the price. Juvenal
Clay was a very bright five-year old and was very much looking forward to Kindergarten. His older sister had been in school for several years and he felt that he was missing out on something. Finally, the big day came and Clay went to Kindergarten. I saw him a few days later and asked him how he liked it. While I do not recall his exact words, Clay indicated that he had had enough of Kindergarten and was ready to go to work with his Dad. I like Clay. Clay is my hero.
The reason that I like Clay is that I was just like him. I, too, looked forward to school and, like Clay, decided that one day was more than enough. It's a good thing that little boys have mothers, otherwise it would only be little girls who ever got an education. (Girls seem to like Kindergarten - I never knew why.) Now my attitude was okay for a five-year old boy, but have you ever noticed how many grown up men and women have this same attitude when it comes to religion?
Many seem to view religion with the same disdain that I had for school when I was a little boy. They see that it is possible for ten different people to come up with ten different interpretations for the same passage of Scripture, and they think that they have come up with a loophole for obedience and knowledge. So they defend their self-imposed spiritual ignorance and feel quite comfortable in doing so. For them, one day of religious education is more than enough.
The fascinating thing is that they would never accept this same attitude in their world. If a cashier shortchanged them and said that it was okay because math was hard and ten different cashiers could come up with ten different amounts when calculating change, you would see an entirely different attitude. So, why the hypocrisy when it comes to the word of God? Could it be that they are simply unwilling to pay the price for an education in God's word? Or could it have something to do with love for Christ? It is something to think about.
is letters contain some things that are hard to understand, which ignorant and unstable people distort, as they do the other Scriptures, to their own destruction... But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
