Do What You Can

But Jesus said, “Leave her alone. Why do you trouble her? She has done a beautiful thing to me. For you always have the poor with you, and whenever you want, you can do good for them. But you will not always have me. She has done what she could...

Mark 14:6-8, ESV

I love this passage. This woman, most likely Mary the sister of Martha and Lazarus, was moved in the very depths of her heart to do something for Jesus for the simple fact that she loved Him. So she took something very precious to her and extremely valuable to men, and she used it all in anointing Jesus. She was met with immediate criticism, but that did not matter. She was only doing what she could.

When you think about it, this is precisely what we are commanded to do. Often times it will not seem enough to us, rarely will it seem enough to others, and occasionally these efforts will meet with the criticism of the ignorant and the wicked. But this simply should not matter to us. What should matter is whether or not we are doing our best for Jesus for the simple fact that we love Him.

We had an election yesterday in America. It was an important one that will have ramifications that will be felt for years. No doubt, there will be people who will try to cheat and change the election to their liking. No doubt there will be people who say our efforts were not enough - perhaps we will even feel that way. But, if we prayed for guidance, made the best choice we were capable of, and then actually voted, then we did what we could.

And while this effort may not seem enough in the eyes of men, it is the eyes of God that really matter. This is not only true for voting, but in everything we do that has consequence in this world in which we live. We must do what we can for God, not only because we are required to do so, but because we love Him. And, this will be enough!

Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth.
