Christians and Voting

"You shall have no other gods before me."

Exodus 20:3, RSV

Therefore say to them, Thus says the LORD of hosts: Return to me, says the LORD of hosts, and I will return to you, says the LORD of hosts.

Zechariah 1:3, RSV

You might look at the title of this article and the two verses above and wonder what they have to do with one another. But when you think about it for a moment or two it becomes pretty obvious.

The vast majority of America's founders were Christians. Because they were Christians they based the Constitution on Judeo/Christian principles and most agreed with the sentiment that American's should prefer Christians for their leaders. As long as this was done, America would remain strong. Then things started to change.

America became prosperous, and the religion of many of the people turned to money. One President even proclaimed that the business of America was business. Next, many Christians began to follow the teachings that voting was not to be done by God's people and gradually stopped taking part in the choosing of their leaders. What happened next was quite predictable. Many Christians (not all) began to vote for "pocketbook issues" rather than godly issues. Those who stopped voting in effect turned the process of choosing their leaders over to the children of the devil instead of children of God. How has that worked out for us?

We have an election today. We have freedom's choice of voting for whoever promises to give us the most goodies, or for those who we believe will stand for God. They are rarely the same. We also have the right to not vote, but by exercising this "right" we often leave the process to those who desire anything but righteousness. We also have the right to complain about the results that we helped make, should we desire to do so, or...

We can vote only for those who by their words and deeds have proven to be followers of God and His standards. This choice will take returning to God, for we cannot rightfully expect His help in the absence of repentance. It will take effort, for you will have to do some research to know what the issues are and where people stand. And it will take devotion to God, because God's people cannot be voting for those who stand for evil, even if it means giving up some of the goodies that they have promised us.

And, it will take prayer, something we have the God-given right to do once we have turned away from our other "gods" and have returned to Him.

"Ask, and it will be given you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For every one who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened."

Matthew 7:7-8, RSV
