On one occasion an expert in the law stood up to test Jesus. "Teacher, " he asked, "what must I do to inherit eternal life?" "What is written in the Law? he replied. "How do you read it?" Luke 10:25-26
One of the greatest discoveries that men will ever make is that the Bible contains the answer for every important question that we may have. It's true, that the Bible will not reveal the name of your future spouse, or of the next big stock or the winner in the 6th race at the tracks tomorrow, but it will answer every legitimate question that we might have concerning God and His purpose for our existence.
In the passage above, the man wanted to know what he needed to do to gain eternal life. Since he lived during the time that the law of Moses was in effect, Jesus asked him, "What is written in the Law?" then Jesus asked him another vital question: "How do you read it?" The reason this is such an important question is that it reveals that men can figure out what the will of God is, if they will take the time needed to read that will.
It's amazing to me that some people firmly believe that God was powerful enough to create the universe and everything in it, but then was so incompetent that He could not even figure out how to get His message across in a way that we could understand. But Jesus forever dispels that false notion when, after the man above answered Christ's question, Jesus said, "You have answered correctly. Do this and you will live."
If men could read the will of God from the Bible during the time of Jesus and be able to figure out what that will was, then we can do the same today. It's true that we are no longer under the old Law, but we have a law that is just as understandable and just as binding. It is called the perfect law that gives freedom, and it will indeed free us if we will simply find out what it has to say, and then do it. Are you listening to the answers that your heavenly Father has given?
But the man who looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues to do this, not forgetting what he has heard, but doing it - he will be blessed in what he does. James 1:25, NIV
