A 911 CALL
Operator: You have reached 911, what is you emergency?
Caller: (Frantic and obviously panicked) I accidentally shot my hunting buddy and I'm afraid that I've killed him.
Operator: Calm down, sir. The first thing you need to do is make sure that he really is dead.
Long pause, followed by a loud "BANG".
Caller: (A bit out of breath, but somewhat calmer) Okay, I'm sure. Now what?
The problem with this gentleman is that he missed the point. We sometimes do that in the important areas of our everyday life. For example, I have noticed an overwhelming sentiment among many of my friends that we are in need of a change in Washington - that something is very wrong with the direction of America. Invariably, however, the main concern is the state of the economy.
Now don't get me wrong, I believe that fiscal responsibility and the creation of jobs are critical issues. However, there are the more important issues, ones concerning the moral and spiritual welfare of our nation, that I am convinced are far more serious. Take the time to read Isaiah and Jeremiah. These inspired books are filled with the history of nations that had lost their spiritual way. As a result, they suffered many physical difficulties including threats to their economies and safety. The people would often turn to God, praying for relief. God's response was always consistent: Relief and salvation can only be achieved through repentance.
That's why we need to consider the character of those running. It is highly likely that those who are opposed to God's commands will be the ones who are most unwilling to make the difficult decisions needed to restore the fiscal sanity of the nation. It is also likely that those who are trying to serve God in their service to the nation, will be the ones most likely to stop the enslaving of future generations through the massive accumulation of debt.
I am convinced that a nation that seeks first to serve God, will also seek to leave a better place for their descendents. As we vote, we must not miss the point of whom we serve. If it's money that you serve, it might be best if you don't even bother to vote.
No one can serve two masters... You cannot serve both God and money. Matthew 6:24, NIV
