A Christian's Right to Choose

So I will go to the leaders and speak to them; surely they know the way of the Lord, the requirements of their God. But with one accord they too had broken off the yoke and torn off the bonds. Jeremiah 5:5, NIV

We live in strange times - a time when people insist that mothers have the right to choose whether or not their unborn children will live, but that people do not have the right to mention God in an unauthorized manner in public. But, who will determine what is authorized concerning the mention of God? Who will detemine when and where it is legal to talk about God or, horror of horrors, to pray to God? Usually, a single judge with a personal axe to grind, or a group of judges with the audacity to believe they have the authority to tell people when and where to pray.

America, however, was not founded by people who thought that judges had that right - we can pretend that the founders intended for God to be excluded from the public square, but the facts indicate a different line of thinking. In fact, here is what our founders thought about God, in their own words:

Christianity is a part of the common law of America. Judge James Wilson: Co-signer of the Constitution & the Declation of Independence

Providence has given to our people the choice of their rulers, and it is a duty as well as a privilege and interest of our Christian nation to select and prefer Christians to be their rulers. Chief Justice John Jay: First Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court

We have staked the whole future of American civilization not upon the power of government - far from it, but we have staked the future of all of our political institutions upon the capacity of mankind for self government, upon the capacity of each and all of us to govern ourselves, to control ourselves, to sustain ourselves according to the Ten Commandments of God. James Madison: One of the primary architects of the Constitution

It is time for Christians to start choosing Christians, once again, for their leaders. We can continue to pretend that our nation's government was intended to be separate from God, but this is inconsistent with the words and deeds of those who formed that very government. Take God into the voting booth with you this year. It is time for Christians to exercise their right to choose... before they lose that right altogether!

When the righteous triumph, there is great elation; but when the wicked rise to power, men go into hiding. Proverbs 28:12, NIV

Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a disgrace to any people. Proverbs 14:34, NIV
